The Queensland Government appointed Conrad Gargett Architecture (CGA) to lead the master planning team for a new world class facility. Consultants Medical Architecture and Deicke Richards Architects are working alongside CGA to develop the master plan.
The Sunshine Coast University Hospital encompasses a 450 overnight bed public tertiary level teaching hospital, with future expansion to 950 overnight beds, that will provide a full range of ambulatory and acute services supported by a central energy plant, car park and an academic and research centre.
Patient care and place making is integral to the SCUH vision. The objective of the master plan is to promote good design, flexibility and accessibility and aims to consider the basic architectural structure and organisation of space to provide a foundation on which a healing environment can be built. As a member of the architectural team, Medical Architecture developed a flexible master plan which will accommodate the development of multiple major facilities on a single site. Mungo Smith is in charge of concept medical planning design, high level strategy and client/ team liaison, application of evidence base design and international perspective on healthcare facilities and leading the high level user consultation and workshops.
One of the key challenges for this project has been to accommodate all the different facilities in a staged development. This solution will allocate space on the site for a flexible open-ended structure that not only responds to the constraints of the site but will also allow for growth and change over the lifetime of the facility. The accommodation is broken down into modules or pods that can be combined or separated in flexible formations that meet the needs of each generation of users.
