Working with the Trust, Medical Architecture produced development control plans for both Stoke Mandeville Hospital and Wycombe General Hospital to achieve the Trust’s long-term shaping health service programme.

The acute hospital in High Wycombe offers a full range of planned surgical services, as well as 24 hour emergency medical care (including minor injuries) and specialist medical care, including stroke and heart conditions. There is also a midwifery-led maternity unit.

The main objectives of the Wycombe DCP were:

  • Analyse the existing accommodation in order to establish a course of action
  • Propose a suitable course of action in the context of the Hospital’s needs
  • Carefully work around a detailed decanting programme where the hospital remains open to the public

The DCP achieved:

  • Considered, careful decanting which enables the hospital to run during phased construction work
  • 15,000m² of new hospital accommodation to current standards and consolidated hospital site
  • Better links within the existing hospital
  • A 5-year build programme to achieve the final result
