Sector: Mental Health
Client: Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust
Role: Architectural Services, Interior Design
Value: £1.1m
Status: Completed 2007

This project, delivered under the NHS Procure 21 programme, comprises of the refurbishment (330m²) and upgrade of the existing Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit and associated wards within the Bede unit at South Tyneside Hospital. The redevelopment also provides a urgently needed facility that meets the criteria of a designated ‘Place of Safety’ in relation to Section 136 of the Mental Health Act 1983, appropriate gender separation with associated day spaces, central activity rooms, and a reception zone.

The newly merged Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust recognised that the quality of the physical environment has a significant impact on the standard therapeutic care. The scheme carefully reorganises the accommodation to provide a clearly graduated privacy whilst retaining good observation and patient safety. Working within the constraints of the existing building fabric, the design simplifies the circulation and maximises the impact of the external space.
