Redevelopment of Building 24, St Nicholas Hospital

Sector: Mental Health
Client: Laing O’Rourke Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Trust
Role: Lead Consultant, Healthcare Planner, Architect, Interior Design.
Value: £8m
Status: Completed April 2008

A partial refurbishment and new build for a 7-bed adolescent learning disability service and 14-bed adult psychiatric intensive care unit. The project makes the best use of existing facilities and helps them operate together effectively.

The scheme offers benefits to the clinical staff and service professionals by providing an enviable working environment with enhanced shared resources. Service users benefit from modern, safe and secure wards that offer privacy and dignity.

On a wider scale, the surrounding community benefits, not only from the healthcare services, but also from the refurbishment of the historic buildings that contribute to the quality of local public open space. The proposal has been developed in the context of a whole site development strategy which aims to provide incremental improvements in the efficiency of the whole hospital estate.
