The Pilot Ward focuses on single bedroom occupation as part of clinical research and monitoring by the Department of Health. Central to the initiative is the plan to test the prototype accommodation in use through an evidence based programme of research. The Project comprises of 3 different configured wings housing a total of 24 bedrooms with separate en-suite.
The research evaluates the prototype unit alongside wards in the present hospital and other NHS hospitals for comparable groups of patients with respect to effects on outcomes including:
Fundamental principles included in the bedroom and ensuite design are accessibility and space for moving and handling patients. The project has incorporated evidence based design principles for increased patient safety drawn on research from the US. Space for visitors, carers and family has been incorporated into all bedrooms.
The unit incorporates an innovative new design for an ensuite bathroom developed by the Department of Health in 2006. A mock-up of the ensuite was assembled at the Hillingdon Hospital to test thergonomic performance of the prototype design. The results of this research can be viewed on the official Hillingdon Hospital NHS Trust website
