Mulberry Bush Day Unit, Tavistock Clinic, London

Sector: Health and Social
Client: The Tavistock & Portman NHS Trust
Role: Architects
Value: £50k
Status: Completed 2004

A small school unit attached to the Tavistock Clinic required a new time out room.

Sponsored by The King’s Fund, this project provides a healing environment to serve as both a place for a child to be held if in need of calming down or as a chill out space.

Medical Architecture designed a pod which from the outside creates a focus point in the busy school location. On the inside it is a safe yet friendly environment for the children to either let off steam or relax depending on their mood. Being ellipse shaped there are no corners or hard edges, the walls and floor are clad in semi soft sport flooring, seating is soft and all services are hidden above a perforated ceiling. Behind a glass panel is a bubble tube, a punch pad is fixed to the wall and self-changeable lights as well as music is provided.
