Double celebrations for Medical Architecture projects

Medical Architecture collected two awards for two mental health projects in this year’s Design & Health International Academy Awards. The awards were presented during the International Symposium gala dinner held earlier this month in Toronto, Canada.

The £23m Wandsworth Recovery Centre at Springfield University Hospital in London, a state-of-the-art facility for adults with acute mental illness, won the mental health design category. Roseberry Park in Middlesbrough is a newly completed £75m development on St Luke’s Hospital site, was awarded highly commended under the same category.

The awards have a significant influence on the design and development of humanistic environments that support health, wellbeing and quality of life around the world. They recognise teams and individuals who through outstanding efforts, have contributed to the progress of knowledge and demonstrated vision and leadership in exemplary initiatives within the field.

Christopher Shaw, Medical Architecture director attended the ceremony, said: “We are delighted to receive worldwide recognition in architecture for mental healthcare. The design of psychiatric hospitals demands particular skills and it is gratifying that our experience in this sector has been acknowledged by these awards.”
