The patient list of this busy surgery had grown to 12,000 and its premises were half the size required by Health building Note standards. Several schemes for extensions into the severely constrained site were rejected on planning grounds due to the loss of parking provision.
With a background of research and design of primary care premises, Medical Architecture were well placed to take on this problematic brief and provide a scheme acceptable to the planners which also exceeded design, health and accessibility standards.
The surgery was reconfigured into a more efficient layout and a new extension built to the site limits, retaining the existing car park. The surgery now largely wheelchair accessible to patients and staff, and was constructed in three phases which allowed the GP’s to continue to practice satisfactorily throughout the 20 week construction period.
