Springfield is a large psychiatric hospital (total site area 33 ha) dating from the early Victorian era; the main hospital building is Grade II listed. The comprehensive redevelopment of Springfield Hospital is for the replacement of inpatient and intensive care facilities for adults with mental illness.

Medical Architecture worked closely with Urban Strategies and South West London and St Georges Mental Health Trust in workshops to develop a programme for the integration of modern mental health services within a new urban environment. A primary component of this project is the involvement of stakeholders in developing a vision for the site and new buildings.

The Springfield redevelopment will be a vibrant community which integrates the highest caliber mental health facilities with a mix of new community, residential and commercial uses in a network of new streets, pathways, and accessible urban spaces combined with creative re-use of listed heritage buildings and historic airing courts.
