Stanhope Parade Health Centre, South Shields

Sector: Primary Care
Client: South Tyneside Primary Care Trust
Role: Architectural Services and Interior Design
Value: £2.5m
Status: Completed and re-opened Spring 2011

This refurbishment project houses a range of services for South Tyneside Primary Care Trust including Sexual Health and accommodates three GP practices. The scheme dramatically updated the existing, run-down accommodation by re-arranging the internal layout which has enhanced confidentiality and improved all areas to the latest Department of Health standards.

To assist wayfinding both internally and externally, the main entrance and reception were relocated to the front of the building. This allowed the exterior of the building at ground floor level to be enlivened through the introduction of brightly coloured exterior grade panels which also allowed for new, larger window openings to be inserted within the existing brickwork.

The existing un-used courtyard at the heart of the building has been opened up to a new central waiting area and landscaped to provide a view out and to increase daylighting within.
