This project was phase 2 of a strategic review of the existing hospital under a Procure 21 framework agreement.

The secure forensic adult psychiatry facility comprises a 3000sqm new build housing a 25 bed medium secure unit and a 16 bed personality disorder unit and both have shared day facilities off ward.

The design concept uses the building to create secure boundaries for landscaped courtyards therefore minimising the use of high fences for security and creating a non-institutional therapeutic environment.

Support services include, a controlled reception, cafe, secure outdoor recreation area, meeting and interview rooms, tribunal accommodation and clinical staff offices.

The Bamburgh Clinic is the first of five high profile national pilot schemes initiated by the Department of Health and is featured on the SHINE website as an example of a good sustainable, therapeutic and non-stigmatising mental health unit.
