Tayside Mental Health Developments Project

Sector: Mental Health
Client: John Laing plc, Laing O’Rourke plc
Role: Lead Consultant, Architect
Value: £99.5m
Status: Completed PFI Bid 2009

NHS Tayside is undertaking the modernisation of its existing mental health facilities, including both the inpatient and outpatient accommodation for their adult mental health services. In addition it is proposing to construct a new medium secure unit for its forensic service, as well as new support facilities for administration, education and training. These facilities are to be located in the grounds of the existing Murray Royal Hospital in Perth, Scotland. A total of 189 new inpatient beds are planned for this site.

The company's scheme proposes a comprehensive site masterplan that respects the main listed buildings, restores the historic parkland context and allows the new facilities to benefit from the outstanding views of the surrounding area offered by the Murray Royal site. The design responds to the steeply sloping location with tiered platforms that provide level ground access to patient accommodation, whilst reducing the visual impact of the scheme in deference to the composition of the historic buildings and landscape.
